Registration Open Now: See details

Functions and floor plans change all the time in large buildings, in every country, because societies are dynamic, and performance standards and user requirements evolve. Yet we need buildings to last for 100+ years In their decisions and practices, it is incumbent on clients, design service professionals, public officials and builders to plan for the inevitability of continual adaptation. Without designing our building stock for change, our collective efforts of meeting sustainability goals are severely undermined.

This 3.5 hour hands-on workshop will engage a group of 20 - 30 (+/-) participants from many design disciplines and countries in design exercises led by Open Building experts. We will explore and discuss basic methods needed to assure that housing, educational and healthcare facilities, both new and existing, are designed for continual change.

• Introduction: In Copenhagen's harbor district, superising architect Sjoerd Soeters, a leading Dutch architect, devised a master plan of perimeter blocks interspersed by canals, with inner courtyards and parking underneath. Each block's floor plan was designed by a different architect. Thirty Danish architects each designed only the facades of individual block parcels, following design guidelines. This complex process turned out to be efficient and produced a thriving new neighborhood offering unique housing choices for Copenhagen.
